Freedom Schools is wrapping up its second summer in Osseo Area Schools this week with finale programs and field trips. Approximately 175 students participated in the six-week program designed to help kids learn to love reading through a multicultural curriculum, to promote a sense of self worth and eliminate the summer slide. Each morning opens with a “Harambee” session including motivational dances, songs and chants celebrating each participant’s individual value. Freedom Schools was held at Birch Grove and Fair Oaks this year.
Freedom School focuses on five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.
